Psychotherapy for Trauma and Distressing Memories
Traumatic experiences and overwhelming life events can leave lasting emotional imprints. You may find yourself feeling stuck in the past, triggered by reminders, or struggling with anxiety, shame, numbness, or emotional pain that doesn’t seem to resolve with time alone.
Trauma-informed psychotherapy offers a compassionate, effective path toward healing – helping your nervous system process what happened so you can feel more present, grounded, and at ease in your life today.
A Gentle, Evidence-Based Approach to Healing
I work with adults who are impacted by trauma and distressing memories using a combination of EMDR, Flash Technique, and AEDP. These approaches are designed to support deep healing without requiring you to relive or re-experience traumatic events in overwhelming ways.
Treatment is collaborative, paced to your needs, and focused on safety, choice, and respect for your lived experience.
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge and no longer feel as if they are happening in the present.
Rather than focusing on talking about events in detail, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to help the nervous system complete natural healing processes that were interrupted by trauma.
EMDR can be helpful for:
- Single-incident trauma and complex trauma
- Childhood experiences and attachment wounds
- Birth Trauma/Negative birth experience
- PTSD and trauma-related anxiety
- Disturbing memories, nightmares, and flashbacks
- Negative beliefs about yourself shaped by past experiences
Many clients report feeling relief, clarity, and increased emotional freedom as memories become less distressing and more integrated.
Flash Technique
The Flash Technique is a newer, gentle intervention that can reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories without requiring you to focus directly on them.
Instead of talking about the trauma itself, Flash Technique uses brief, indirect attention and moments of positive or neutral focus. This makes it especially helpful for clients who:
- Feel overwhelmed when thinking about trauma
- Have highly charged or early memories
- Want a less activating entry point into trauma work
Flash Technique can be used on its own or integrated into EMDR therapy, often helping clients feel safer and more regulated as they begin the healing process.
AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy)
AEDP is an attachment-based, experiential therapy that emphasizes healing through emotional connection, safety, and compassion.
In AEDP, we focus not only on what was painful, but also on your strengths, resilience, and capacity for healing. Emotions are approached gently, at a pace that feels manageable, with careful attention to your nervous system.
AEDP is particularly helpful for:
- Developmental or relational trauma
- Emotional neglect or attachment wounds
- Chronic shame, self-criticism, or emotional disconnection
- Building a deeper sense of self-worth and authenticity
This approach supports transformation by fostering secure connection – both within yourself and in relationships.
What Therapy Can Help You With
Trauma-informed therapy may help you:
- Feel less triggered by reminders of the past
- Reduce anxiety, panic, or emotional numbness
- Sleep better and experience fewer intrusive memories
- Develop a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself
- Feel more present, grounded, and emotionally alive
- Build a sense of safety in your body and relationships
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting what happened – it means no longer being controlled by it.
A Safe, Collaborative Process
You are always in control of the pace and direction of therapy. We will work together to ensure that sessions feel supportive, grounded, and aligned with your goals. No one is ever pushed to go faster or deeper than feels safe.
Trauma healing is possible, even if you’ve been carrying these experiences for a long time.
